Hello, Tigers! It’s staff reporter Isabel Rodriguez. I’ve chosen to tell you guys all about Quitapenas – what they are, how they work, where they come from, and if they are still used today!
What are Quitapenas?

Muñecas Quitapenas, also known as “worry dolls”, are tiny, handmade dolls, usually no more than 2 inches tall. They’re made from bits of wood, cloth, and thread, and they wear colorful clothes that kind of look like traditional Mayan outfits. Even though they are small, they have a very beautiful and strong message behind them.
How do they work?

The idea behind these small dolls is that you tell them all about any of your worries and/or what’s causing you anxiety before you go to bed. Kids usually whisper to it or you can talk out loud like you normally would, whatever feels right to you. Then you put the doll under your pillow, and while you sleep it removes all your worry and/or anxiety. Doesn’t this sound nice and comforting?
Where do they come from?

These dolls come from Guatemala and Mexico. They are a big part of their cultures. You receive these dolls either in a cloth bag or in a container. The legend in Guatemala is inspired by Mayan traditon. The story goes that a princess was given the power to fix people’s problems, and that’s how these “worry dolls” got their purpose. It’s amazing how something so small can be based on a legend like that and how these dolls are still talked about and relevant today.
Are they still used?

Even though the dolls and their legend originated during pre-colonial times, “worry dolls” are still very much used today all over the world. Some people just keep them around as a cute reminder to relax, but they’re also used in therapy and/or in schools to help children open up about their feelings. I was child who benefited from the use of these dolls. I brought my worry dolls with me everywhere. They can genuinely help someone move past their worries and fears.
In conclusion, “Worry dolls” are very comforting for some people. Life can be full of stress, anxiety, and worry. These dolls serve as an outlet while expanding the culture of Mexicans and Guatemalans. Hopefully this article has shown you the greatness of these dolls. Maybe you’re someone struggling and, perhaps, your own “worry dolls” will help.
