In The Summer I Turned Pretty, there are many characters you will meet, but the main ones that you need to know are Isabella Conklin (also known as Belly), Conrad Fisher, and Jeremiah Fisher. Belly and her family go to the Fishers’ beach house every summer, and every summer is the same until she turns sixteen. It is the summer of her first love, her first heartbreak, and, ultimately, when she grows up. The big debate of the century is Conrad vs Jeremiah…the answer has always been Conrad, but the only way we can prove that is if we dig a little deeper by exploring the pros and cons of each of Belly’s love interests.

These are only three of the responses from those who voted for Conrad; there are so many more. Most people who used to be Team Jeremiah have switched to Team Conrad, like myself, after the third season of the show. The third season turns a lot of team Jeremiah people into team Conrad people due to Jeremiah’s actions, but that’s something for you to find out if you are a new fan!
I am team Conrad because Conrad has always shown his love for Belly. Sure, season one was a little hard, but you have to cut the guy some slack. He was handling the fact that his mother had cancer all by himself because he didn’t want to hurt anyone else by dragging them down with this news. He thought if he could just forget about the cancer then it would go away, but that didn’t happen. Sadly, his mother died and so did his relationship with Belly. That doesn’t mean he stopped loving her, though. When Belly turned to Jeremiah, Conrad tried to force himself to stop loving her, but he physically couldn’t. He’s always loved her; it wasn’t something he could easily put to the side. When Conrad was telling Jeremiah about him and Belly in the second season, he told him “It physically hurts not to tell her I love her.” Although he didn’t want to hurt his brother, he couldn’t just keep it from him.
When Jeremiah and Belly got engaged, Conrad tried to keep his distance because being close to her again would cause him to remember all the times they had together and re-ignite feelings for him. But, when Belly ran away from home to the beach house, Conrad went wedding shopping with her, even though she was supposed to go with Jeremiah but he was stuck at work. Conrad made her dinner and even got her mom to agree to attend the wedding after disapproving many times, something Jeremiah couldn’t do.
Conrad didn’t connect with any other girl since he and Belly broke up and never even looked at another girl because he knew the only girl he ever wanted was Belly. He did so much for her when they weren’t together and eventually tells her that he’s still in love with her and that she shouldn’t be with Jeremiah. He asks her to try again with him by her side. He promises to do it right this time and not hurt her. Belly had the audacity to tell him they never had anything together (which is such a lie). Before this, at her Bachelorette party, she gets intoxicated and tells her best friend that she never saw herself with Jeremiah, that she only ever envisioned herself with Conrad. It’s always been Conrad; ever since she was younger, she’s dreamed of Conrad and a future with him.
Fast-forward to the wedding day. The night before, Belly tells Jeremiah about Conrad still being in love with her, and Jeremiah gets super upset…so upset that, on the day of the wedding, he goes missing. Conrad eventually finds him and Jeremiah is so mad that he punches Conrad, but Conrad doesn’t react because he thinks he deserves it. Conrad tells him that he’s not sorry for loving her but sorry for keeping it from him and that he just didn’t want to hurt him. Conrad also tells him he tried to stop loving her for his sake, but he just couldn’t. Jeremiah shortly calls off the wedding because Belly can’t admit that she doesn’t love Conrad to his face. She ends up running away to Paris and staying there for five months.
Belly misses Christmas and Thanksgiving with her family but meets new friends and becomes a better person. She even finds a new person of interest, Benito. But don’t worry, Conrad’s fans, he doesn’t get in the way of anything. She shuts him down when he asks her to go with him to Mexico. On the day before her birthday, Conrad comes to Paris to surprise her. When she sees him, it is awkward, but he is so excited to see her. He missed her and can easily express that now. He told her friends why he came to Paris, and it was to come and see her for her birthday because he never forgot her birthday.
The night goes beautifully: they reminisce about their past relationship and are acting as if they are still in a relationship. The next morning, Conrad asks Belly if she wants to get breakfast, but Belly declines. It was almost like she was uncomfortable, but she just didn’t know if this was what she wanted. Conrad makes it clear that he still loves her and doesn’t think he could ever stop loving her. Belly couldn’t believe this, so Conrad leaves to catch his train. At the last second, Belly realizes that Conrad is what she wants, and she runs to catch him on the train and tells him that he is what she wants and what she’s always wanted.
