As the years go on, our technology and online resources are rapidly advancing, which makes us wonder, has our learning in school also advanced? With the start of the new year, many schools have adopted technology as a new way of learning. However, have you ever questioned whether this technology is really helping us? Are we developing our learning skills, or is technology causing us to lose certain learning abilities?
Pros:
A survey was sent to students of EPHS asking how they felt about technology in learning. There were many positive views on the subject. 68.4% of students stated that technology has helped them more than traditional teaching methods. They expressed reasons like technology explaining things in a simpler way, technology being more efficient, technology providing more learning opportunities, and technology providing easier access to information.
Cons:
However, not everyone shared the same positive opinions. 31.6% of students expressed concerns, such as getting “distracted easily by electronics”, “feeling that teachers don’t engage with them as much as they used to”, and “cheating being easier now with AI”. Some also think many students rely too much on technology. These opinions show that there are some problems with technology and also make us wonder how much technology really helps us learn.
Also, technology can affect our social skills, since we are not talking to people face to face as much as we used to. During the pandemic, this was a big issue. People had to depend on technology to communicate. Studies have shown that not having face to face interactions and communication with people has made it harder to talk and get along with others, proving that having too much technology can hurt our social skills.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, while technology has many benefits and has increased our access to information and communication, it also has problems we should reconsider. Although technology has made life easier for many, the best way to use technology is wisely and safely, while not relying on it for every little thing. Take advantage of technology by using it to help you learn, but don’t let it take away the creativity of the mind. As we continue to use technology in schools, we should keep the good and bad in mind. Technology should help us, but it shouldn’t take away our authentic learning experiences, creativity, and personal interactions.
