This article will explore horror movies that are a bit strange, unusual, or feature quirky plots. It’s designed to give you some variety when you feel like you’ve watched all the typical horror films.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Killer Klowns From Outer Space was released on May 27, 1988. Stephan Chiodo, the director, is also a writer and assisted in the development of Robocop, Gremlins, Tales from the Hood, Good Burger, and the Critters franchise. The movie is about two teenagers, Mike and Debbie, who investigate a comet crash just outside their quiet small town. As the movie goes on, they discover a pack of murderous aliens who heavily resemble circus clowns. While the two try to warn the authorities, the clowns start harvesting and eating as many people as they can. It’s not until the aliens kidnap Debbie that Mike decides it’s up to him to stop the clowns’ rampage.
Behind the Scenes:
Killer Klowns From Outer Space was filmed in Watsonville, California and at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The film used practical effects and rubber suits.
Sequel?
20th Century Fox was planning to create the sequel, but after Disney acquired Fox’s assets, Disney blocked Fox’s involvement in the project by refusing to let them make the movie.
Totally Killer
Totally Killer is the newest film on this list, released on September 28th, 2023. It was directed by Nahnatchka Khan, who also directed Ali Wong: Don Wong, Always Be My Maybe, and White Girl Problems. The plot of this movie starts off a bit serious but quickly shifts into a more comedic theme, making you think about how everything connects with time travel. It begins thirty-five years after the shocking murders of three teens, as the infamous Sweet 16 Killer returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. When 17-year-old Jamie comes face-to-face with the masked killer, she accidentally time-travels back to 1987 thanks to a friend’s school project involving a time machine. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar culture, Jamie teams up with her teenage mother to take down the killer once and for all.
Behind the Scenes:
The movie was produced by Jason Blum, under his Blumhouse Television banner, and Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath, under the Divide/Conquer banner. The filming location was in the Templeton Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Sequel?
Totally Killer was only released in 2023, so currently, there is no planned sequel. On the other hand, the movie’s ending does leave room for there to be some sort of sequel in the near future.
Leprechaun
Leprechaun was released on January 8th, 1993. It was directed by Mark Jones, Steven Ayromlooi, Rob Sprea, Brian Trechard Smith, Zach Lipovsky, and Rodman Flender. It’s all about a man named Dan O’Grady, who steals 100 gold coins from a leprechaun while he’s on vacation in Ireland. A leprechaun then follows him home, but Shay manages to lock him in a safe and keeps him at bay with a four-leaf clover (the Leprechaun has magic powers and the four leaf clover stops him for using them). Ten years later, J.D. Redding and his daughter Tory rent O’Grady’s property for the summer, and when their new neighbors accidentally release the leprechaun, he goes on a murderous rampage to reclaim his gold.
Behind the Scenes:
Filming for this movie took place from October 28 to December 3, 1991, starting at Valencia Studios, where Terminator 2: Judgement Day had recently wrapped up. Other scenes were shot at Big Sky Ranch, which was also the location for Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons. Café scenes for the movie were filmed at The Saugus Cafe in Saugus, California. Jennifer Aniston, who played Tory, initially thought the movie would be a bit corny, but it’s still fun to see her in her first film.
Sequel?
The original Leprechaun paved the way for several sequels, including Leprechaun 2, Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun 4: In Space, Leprechaun in the Hood, Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, Leprechaun Origins, and finally, Leprechaun Returns.
Conclusion:
For now, this is the end of the Silly Horror Movie list, but there are plenty more out there and even more on the way. Stay tuned for more wacky and wild films to enjoy while you celebrate Halloween!
