The Game of the Year is decided on by a team of critics and sometimes public votes that help determine which game deserves the title. The Game of the Year is awarded to the video game that is considered to have provided the best experience in the creative and technical fields.
How does a game get chosen for GOTY?
There are 5 major components that go into choosing what game is fit for GOTY. A jury (or team) of numerous video game journalists and critics from various media outlets typically select the nominees and vote for which game is the winner. During the voting process, the jury submits their ballots with their top choices and the game that receives the most votes wins. Some of the award shows also include a small percentage of the public to contribute to what game is chosen. They also test for the eligibility of the game by checking the release date before the ceremony starts. While not all critics believe that a certain game deserves an award, sometimes, due to majority vote, that game might get chosen which can then affect the rest of the games and the public’s opinion if they have enjoyed the other games nominated during the election more.
Astro Bot
Astro Bot was a platform game developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5 to coincide with the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary in 2024. Astro Bot was the third game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment to win GOTY following God of War in 2018 and The Last of US part 2 in 2020. Astro Bot is a 3D platform game: you play as a tiny robot that goes venturing through different worlds completing challenges, saving other robots, earning rewards, and finding Easter eggs hidden in the game. According to a 10/10 review by Stacey Henley on the website TheGamer, “Astro Bot might also be the best ASMR game ever with pitch perfect sound design that reacts to every single surface like no other game before.”
My Review of Astro Bot
I played Astro Bot and I enjoyed playing it. For me, it was a perfect game to relax after playing more competitive games. There is no pressure at all playing the game. You’re able to freely explore everything in the game without having a set path, like a lot of other games. I would recommend this game to young players or people new to video games who don’t enjoy competitive games and just would like to chill and have fun. This game is aimed towards younger players due to the easy playthroughs and controls in addition to the easy atmosphere. The game is very easy to learn and enjoyable. Playing this game can help one to be calm when parents are focusing on something else. My nephew and niece enjoy playing this game as well as my sister who likes playing with them. I recommend this game to anyone; it’s definitely worth trying out.
