Vanguard: The NXIVM Cult

Intro:

“Good morning, Grandmaster” sent Sylvle, along with a nude photo of herself to Keith Raniere on most mornings. If you couldn’t tell where this article is going then I’ll leave that there for you. From sexual abuse to psychological deterioration is now being presented to you, Vanguard: The NXVIM Cult.

KR

Keith Allen Raniere was born on August 26, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY to parents Vera Oschypko Raniere and James Raniere. When Raniere was only 5 years old, his parents separated and he was relocated to Suffern, NY. Raniere attended Suffern High School in ninth grade before going to a private school named Rockland County Day School and would graduate in June 1978. From there Raniere landed placement in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and barely passed with a 2.26 GPA despite having claimed his intelligence since an early age by being able to excel in math and science. Additionally adding how he read Isaac Asimov’s mind control-themed work at only 12 years old and credited the novel as inspiration for his later development of NXVIM. Raniere had much luck with women as he attracted many and had them following him for chances, though there were two significant experiences that stuck out as what should’ve been warning signs of his character and actions in the future.

One being his involvement with Heidi Hutchinson’s sister, Gina. Around Christmas of 1984, Heidi would find the 24 year old’s rear end stuck in her teenage sister’s window. Gina expressed, “She was caught. Keith was caught. And then they had some explaining to do.” Raniere would excel in explaining things and had a way of catching your eye by listening very carefully to you. He managed to convince Gina’s mom that he wanted something serious with her daughter, though Gina would find out about his other girlfriends and was ultimately heartbroken. Hutchinson did go on to express how, “Raniere had convinced his girlfriends that men are hardwired to be polyamorous but women are not, and that the only reason his romantic arrangement seems wrong to others is because people are brainwashed by society’s flawed values.”

The second experience being of which would be revealed to measure his beliefs of his intelligence was with Barbara Bouchey. Having split in 2008, before that was a number of experiences shared with Bouchey and claims of how Raniere was sensitive to other people’s moods and energy as he would pick up on it easily. One conversation that stuck out was between Bouchey and Raniere’s father. When Keith was 7 or 8 years old, he took an intelligence test that would determine if he was gifted. When he found out of the results he completely changed his character, Bouchey says, “He said it was almost like a switch went off. And suddenly, overnight, he turned into, like, Jesus Christ. And that he was superior and better than everybody, like a deity.” Adding on,  Raniere did go on to have a child with his longtime partner Kristin Keeffe. Keeffe had departed from NXVIM and left Raniere, all to finish any business she had with him. Raniere was deemed “dangerous” by Keeffe along with the idea that he was experimenting on his child and that Raniere had ordered Keeffe to keep his child away from peers. It was revealed at his sentencing that Raniere did not pay child support for his kid.

Raniere’s youngest victim was only 15 years old. Sister of this victim, “Daniela,” had dropped out of school to join NXVIM but struggled to leave after he was found to want to engage in relations with her younger sister.

NXVIM

The development of NXVIM started off in the 1980’s when Raniere founded Consumer’s Byline Inc, a buying incorporation that would offer discounts in return for recruitment. At a CBI meeting, Raniere would go on to meet Toni Natalie, the corp’s biggest buyer, and her husband. Their marriage would end shortly and Natalie would find herself to be dating Raniere for 8 years. In 1993, CBI began to decline and soon after being investigated, New York would claim CBI to be a pyramid scheme. In 1994, Raniere would go on to create National Health Network, a multi-level seller of vitamins; this business would go on to fail three years later. In 1996, Raniere signed a consent order with New York State to resolve the accusations against CBI. Raniere would be fined $40,000 and ultimately ended up paying not even half of it despite claiming a multi-million dollar net worth. This consent order also barred Raniere from promoting, offering, or granting participation in a chain distribution scheme.

After this, Raniere would go on to meet Nancy Salzman, a nurse and hypnotist, and together they founded Executive Success Programs, a company based on programs that offer self-improvement. A few years later, the name NXVIM was adopted along with a title of Raniere’s favorite video game, ‘Vanguard.’ A lot of teaching was influenced by many of Raniere’s favorite authors and what were known to be diverse influences by science-fiction novels. In 2002, NXVIM recruited some of the most influential members, the multibillion dollar heir of the Bronfmans. The teachings of NXVIM followed seminars, movement groups that were focused on “women empowerment,” and the expression of feelings and experiences that lead to evidence that could be used for blackmailing. Raniere would further lose money in commodity trading, losing $70 million. Bouchey and the Bronfmans would go on to cover $160 million of their own funds to pay off these losses.

DOS

Things would only go downhill from here as DOS was founded within NXVIM and as a part of Raniere’s accomplices. In 2015, Raniere created a subgroup called “DOS” which stands for “Dominus Obsequious Sororium.” This subgroup consisted of tiers that were deemed to be from “masters” down to “slaves.” Slaves were then instructed to recruit in order to become a “master,” also masters having to serve the people above them. With 150 women in DOS and Raniere being the only male, he was deemed to be the “grandmaster” of all of them. The purpose of this subgroup that was expressed by Nancy Salzman was, “ to venerate Raniere and foster an atmosphere of total obedience and secrecy” and “ helping Raniere edit his DOS manifesto that enforced the master-slave relationships.” Along with this was the collecting of blackmail material such as nude photographs or videos and rights to personal assets. This was also a monthly thing required in order to fulfill part of his orders, and this “collateral” would be released if any of the DOS members left or talked about this organization. Many of the abuse occurred within this group in which Raniere would task his members with many assignments such as: seduction assignments and engaging in sexual activity with Raniere, which would act as the evidence during trial for his conviction of sex trafficking.

MEMBERSHIP

The inclusions of this membership, which included the sexual abuse, also consisted of mental and physical abuse. There were many orders given in this subgroup that were depended on from the rest of the members or “masters” such as free labor, “readiness drills” which consisted of taking orders day and night for masters, corporal punishment, etc. The corporal punishments being painful poses, cold showers, and whipping with a strap. There was also a humiliating usage of racial slurs as a way of belittling the members. With this also followed branding of Raniere’s initials to the members that was done by masters to slaves. The “ritual” followed a script created by Raniere: slaves were to be fully nude, these rituals were to be filmed and used as collateral. In a recorded conversation between Raniere and the other members, he expresses, “The person should probably ask to be branded. They should probably say that before they’re held down, so it doesn’t seem like they’re being coerced.” The exposure of DOS was done by Frank Parlato on June 5th, 2017. He reported the usage of branding and this subgroup which further lead to an article by the New York Times being published in October of the same year that detailed the abuses. Following the piece, Raniere wrote that women who were branded were being “shamed by a misogynistic strike” and that DOS was an “autonomous” organization.

TRIAL

In 2018, Raniere and his inner circle would go on to flee to Mexico. There was a search warrant in place for his email account on January 18, 2018 which followed by an arrest warrant issued on February 14. On March 26, Mexican Federal Police located Raniere in a villa outside of Puerto Vallarta, ultimately ending with his arrest and deportation. Salzman later testified that when police arrived to the villa, she and Raniere had barricaded the master suite, with Raniere attempting to hide in a master closet. Authorities would take custody of Raniere and presented him in the federal court of Fort Worth, Texas and was later taken to custody in the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York City. The complaints that lead to his arrest were in relation to DOS and the many acts he coerced members to take participation in. Prosecutors had remanded to keep Raniere in MDC til his sentencing in 2021. The trial consisted of charged acts which were: Sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of sexual abuse material, sex trafficking identity theft, conspiracy to alter documents, racketeering, etc. Prosecutors argued that Raniere was a predator and targeted people to take advantage of their lives while defense claimed that people signed up for this and Raniere was simply a coach.Prosecution witnesses included Lauren Salzman, victims “Sylvie,” “Daniela,” “Jay,” and “Nicole.” On June 19, 2019, the jury found Ranire guilty on all charges after 5 hours of deliberation.

While awaiting sentencing, Raniere had filed for a new trial after having had two motions claiming that witnesses perjured themselves and were intimidated, Judge Garafius would deny both motions. Ahead of his sentencing, prosecutors submitted a number of communications by Raniere as evidence of remorselessness, with this had federal prosecutors also ask for life imprisonment for the severity of his crimes and his lack of remorse. On October 27, 2020, Judge Nicholad Garfius would sentence Raniere to 120 years in prison and fined him $1.7 million. Raniere was transferred to a series of detention centers that are designated for sex offenders. In May 2022, Raniere would go on to file multiple lawsuits against the U.S department of justice and federal bureau of prisons and had followed up with an injunction allowing visitation from whom he claimed is a paralegal that was working on his appeals. They denied the injunction and dismissed the suit for an insufficient amount of service.

CONCLUSION

Now while the scars run deeper than the brandment of the victim’s pelvises, we may rest assured that this man and his accomplices won’t be able to cause any further harm to anyone else anymore. It may not be happening here but it may be happening somewhere else around the world or could be a situation your friend or neighbor could be facing. If you know of someone who is currently facing this or if you yourself are endangered, call or text at 800-656-4673 (National Sexual Abuse Hotline).
