Under typical circumstances, a murder in plain sight is usually condemned and deemed as inexcusable with collective grief where everyone offers condolences to the victim and their loved ones and community. However the assasination of former UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson was met with celebrations and sympathy for the killer, Luigi Mangione, who is seen as a hero for attempting to address the issue of Americans getting their insurance denied daily.
The Assassination
On December 4th, 2024, at 6:44 a.m., the shooter, Luigi Mangione opened fire outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, New York, killing former UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, who was heading to attend and speak at the UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference. Thompson was shot in his right calf once and his back. The perpetrator appeared to be waiting for Thompson to leave the hotel before he shot him before escaping on an e-bike after shooting him in the back. Reportedly, Thompson appeared to travel without a security guard besides him, which was unusual since he had . However, this attack was not entirely unexpected since Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson had stated that there had been some threats against him before the assassination took place. Additionally, UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth group had received threats against its high-level executives beforehand.

Although they weren’t able to catch the shooter immediately, they managed to retrieve vital pieces of evidence from the crime scene that could potentially aid in finding the shooter’s identity: a burner phone, granola bars, and a malfunctioning gun that could have finger prints from the shooter.

Who is Luigi Mangione?
The shooter who is identified as 26 years old, Luigi Mangione, at the time However, he wasn’t suspected to be behind an assassination as he maintained positive relationships with his peers, graduated high school as a valedictorian and Ivy League). He was known for his active social media presence as he posted smiling photos from his travels, his weightlifting routines, and before eventually disappearing. Many people who knew him were shocked that somebody like him would be involved in the assassination. Before the assassination, he experienced chronic back pain in Hawaii during one of his surfing lessons and underwent surgery in order to treat it. At the time, Luigi also suffered from Lyme disease and severe brain fog, which significantly impacted his academic and mental state. He believed that brain fog wasn’t understood by the medical community. He or his family weren’t patients of UnitedHealthcare, though there has been speculation that he targeted Brian Thompson since he was the CEO of the largest health industry company in the United States. Currently, as of February 12, 2026, Luigi is facing charges of second-degree murder, weapons possession, and forgery.
The Media’s Perception
The media in the United States remains deeply divided on the assassination as many condemned the shooting and viewed it as outrageous while others sympathized with the perpetrator and agreed with his stance about the flaws within America’s healthcare system. Through Emerson College Polling’s survey, 68% of voters overall expressed that the assassination was unacceptable, while 33% of younger voters believed that it was unacceptable. 19% of male voters who took the survey believed that it was acceptable compared to 14% of female voters.

Controversies Surrounding Thompson & UnitedHealthcare
Prior to being appointed as the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, he began his career in 2004 Many of his colleagues remembered positive things about him such as his commitment to improve the American healthcare system. However, the public’s view has contrasted with his public image as claims of him using AI to deny medical claims.
