Who is LCD Soundsystem?
If you ever need a new band to add to your playlist, check out LCD Soundsystem! Since the start of it all in 2002, LCD Soundsystem has been a multi-member band fronted by the man that is, James Murphy. Throughout the years, LCD Soundsystem has had a few different members; the current members are Nancy Whang, Pat Mahoney, and Al Doyle. Other needed members for live performances are selected to play with the band according to their location of each concert and availability. With this article, I hope to broaden your music taste and give LCD Soundsystem a new fan!

What kind of music can I expect?

LCD Soundsystem can be categorized as an assortment of genres. If I had to describe it, their music is within a dance-punk mashup genre. To be able to be in this kind of genre, LCD Soundsystem includes elements of electronic and disco within their music, and they do this all while still being a part of the indie scene. Most will think those genres and scenes don’t mix well, but that’s because some people think that being indie is an aesthetic when that’s far from what it actually means. To be indie is to be independent, which means within the music industry, you have your own creative freedom and don’t work with major corporate financing. LCD Soundsystem is indie because they, in fact, do not work with a major corporate level record label. Instead, from the start, they have been working with DFA Records. In true indie fashion, once LCD Soundsystem became successful in the mainstream, James Murphy announced their end and a farewell tour. But do not panic. James Murphy wasn’t done. He made a comeback in 2015. Since then, LCD Soundsystem has been going strong and even just recently performed for 4 nights in a row at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Their 4 nights in Chicago were a part of their tour that started in December of 2025.
DFA Records Involvement

If LCD Soundsystem is indie because they don’t work with a huge record label, then what is DFA Records? Well, in 2001, DFA Records was co-founded by LCD Soundsystem’s very own James Murphy. DFA Records was designed to foster the DJ scene you see in LCD Soundsystem’s music. However, saying all DFA’s sound comes from LCD Soundsystem would be a lie. There was a band before James Murphy decided to start his own, and that would be Universal’s The Rapture. Having so much early success, Universal wanted The Rapture to sign with them. They took the deal, so then came LCD Soundsystem. In the beginning of DFA Records, James Murphy and other co-founders named the record label “Death from Above”, which is a military slogan of the air force. However, this name had been set before the September 11th attacks, so, immediately following the tragedy, co-founder Jonathan Galkin and James Murphy put that name to rest and decided to just abbreviate it. In an interview with Kenny Gates of PIAS GROUP about how close each event was to each other, Jonathan Galkin said, “It was spooky. Maybe that was a sign: stop now!”
What does ‘LCD’ stand for?
While on the topic of what something really means, people wonder what the ‘LCD’ in LCD Soundsystem actually stands for. Many people thought that it could stand for ‘Liquid-Crystal-Display’, which is a computer monitor display that uses liquid crystals to display images in color. For a while, people were okay with this assumption because it just made sense. Not only were LCD monitors really big at the time, but James Murphy was known to be well versed in technological information and gear. So, ‘LCD’ standing for a type of monitor display would fit James Murphy’s interests. However, we now know the actual story. Before LCD Soundsystem was a thing, James Murphy and Pat Mohoney were performing at a Christmas party one night. They were covering songs by a band named ‘Liquid Liquid’. As a joke, they decided to nickname their performances ‘Liquid Christmas Display’, which was a play on LCD monitors. As for the Soundsystem, I like to think that it just represents the band’s ability to perform in a loud, coordinated, and high-quality manner.

Truly, LCD Soundsystem is such an interesting, unique band. If you do decide to check them out, choose an album, turn up the volume, and just listen to the absolute genius work that LCD Soundsystem puts out. If you’re the kind of person interested in hearing how they started, listen to “Losing My Edge” off the album LCD Soundsystem. However, if you just want to jump straight to the tracks they’re most known for, “Dance Yrself Clean”, “All My Friends”, and ‘I Can Change’ is the route you’ll want to take. Unfortunately, LCD Soundsystem hasn’t made anything new since 2017, so if you’re looking for something more recent, “American Dream” is the newest work from them you’ll hear.
