The Story So Far: Poppy Playtime
Introduction: Today I will be discussing one of the more popular games within the horror genre, and that game is Poppy Playtime. Created mainly by Mob Entertainment, alongside a few other creators, this game is a first-person survival game, where you must use your trusty GrabPack (tool) to escape the monsters that exist within the abandoned factory. The game is split into 5 chapters with a soon to be 6th. I will go in depth into the lore from the beginning chapters to the current chapters. Poppy Playtime’s popularity grows from a combination of both its unique gameplay mechanics, such as the GrabPack and the dark lore. The game’s story, which revolves around the sinister secrets of the abandoned toy factory, is generally well perceived by players who enjoy uncovering the deeper narratives hinted at through environmental storytelling. Players appreciate the mystery and the chilling implications of the lore, making the narrative all the more exciting.

Context: The story of Poppy Playtime begins with the player. You as the player are looking for your co-workers, who have mysteriously disappeared 10 years prior. The factory, created by a man named Elliot Ludwig, served initially to entertain and make kids smile through the creation of toys. These ‘toys’ were actually orphans, who were experimented on by scientists at the facility, and turned into toys through the different initiatives. After arriving at the abandoned factory, the player must find and evade the monstrous toys that are attempting to kill them by using their GrabPack and survival skills.

Chapter 1: “A tight squeeze”
This is the beginning of the story of Poppy Playtime. The player receives a letter from the management of Playtime Co. The player then returns to the factory, mainly despite the letter received, and because of the disappearance of co-workers. When the player arrives, however, the player finds that none of the staff are at their posts, and the player finds a way into a room to grab the GrabPack. From there, the player decides to enter the factory, where the player is tasked with finding power to unlock a path deeper into the factory. Little does the player know, however, that the huge toy animatronic named Huggy Wuggy is watching. The player from there is tasked to find the truth by looking for the Poppy flower. After being met with Huggy Wuggy and chased by him a second time in the vents of the facility, the player runs into a dead end and drops a huge block on him, which causes him to fall deep and disappear. From there, the player makes a way and finds the flower, to which the player finds a doll in a case. The player sets her free and goes unconscious.
Chapter 2: “Fly in a Web”

The player dives deeper into the facility and encounters Poppy, a doll who serves as their guide. However, upon reaching a certain area, the next antagonist, Mommy Longlegs, emerges. She kidnaps Poppy and forces the player to participate in three dangerous and mentally taxing games—Musical Memory, Wack-a-wuggy, and Statues—to earn a code for a train. After surviving the ordeal of these games, the player is relentlessly pursued by Mommy Longlegs as she completely loses her composure. The player manages to escape and kill Mommy Longlegs, who is destroyed by a machine known as the Jaws of Life. The player then continues the search for the train. The Prototype retrieves the body of Mommy Longlegs and is thus introduced as a major antagonist in the factory. The player succeeds in rescuing Poppy again, and they begin their escape on the train. They discover that Poppy has tricked them, and their train ultimately crashes near an area called Playcare.

Chapter 3: “Deep Sleep”
From the crash site, the player is taken by a huge cat-like plushie, known as Catnap. Catnap is later revealed to be the antagonist, who used to be one of the eight smiling critters. The player ventures through the abandoned Playcare, only to find hidden secrets and horrible scenarios. The player is met with “Ollie”, a helpful voice on the phone who helps the player evade the dangers lying within the Playcare. Ollie explains that the “Red Smoke” is dangerous and flammable, which could put the player to sleep for long periods of time. The player is met with a crazy, corrupted teacher named Mrs Delight, whom the player ends up killing as well. From there, the player is tasked with stopping Catnap, who worships and sees the Prototype as his god. The player also gets insight into the “Hour of Joy”, which was a massacre of the workers of Playtime Co. This event was instigated and led by the Prototype. The player finds out that the workers are all dead because of the toys who participated in the Hour of Joy. Later, through tapes and other items, the player finds out that the children that lived in Playcare were orphans, who were experimented on by the scientists and turned into toys. The player meets an ally, a pink, female version of Huggy Wuggy named Kissy Missy, and the player finds out that the Prototype saved Catnap, and therefore making Catnap give up his freedom and treat the Prototype like a god. Before defeating Catnap, the player is met with the broken dog-like plushie named Dogday, who explains everything that happens to those who oppose the Prototype, dubbed “heretics”. Dogday then gets possessed and killed by the mini versions of the smiling critters, chasing the player relentlessly until the player escapes. The player then defeats Catnap, who gets severely burned, then killed by the Prototype. The player and Poppy make their way down to the lower floors through an elevator.
Chapter 4: “Safe Haven”

“Broken things”
After escaping the dangers of Safe Haven, the player is heading to the labs of the factory. The player is met with the return of Huggy Wuggy, who keeps trying to kill them. Poppy and the Prototype focus on their rivalry and the player finds out that the Prototype is a kid, deep down inside. As the player goes down an elevator, the player loses the grabback tool, as Huggy Wuggy takes it and the elevator crashes. The player is met with two new allies, Giblet and Chum Chompkins, who help the player navigate the labs. Poppy ends up confronting the Prototype, who injures her severely, but Kissy Missy interferes, allowing both of them to escape. The player meets yet another antagonist, who is named Lily Lovebraids. By evading her, the player ends up killing her as well. The player met with the return of Doctor Harley Sawyer, who has returned as an AI, stalking and attempting to give information to the player on how to defeat the Prototype. The player then goes on deeper into the factory, preparing for the final battle.
Chapter 6: While the chapter is already confirmed, there is some given information from Mob entertainment. The leaks, which were specified by the creator, explain how the player might possibly escape and set themselves free from the horrors of the Factory, with the possible return of Harley Sawyer once again, though this time, he might be an ally.
Conclusion: As this game continues, I am sure that people will be waiting, hoping that the next chapter will come soon and quench the thirst of the horror enthusiasts who hope to play Chapter 6 soon. This is all the lore for this game, the story will now end here… For now.
