Introduction:

The “Monster of the Andes,” later identified as Pedro Alonso Lopez, is a Colombian serial killer who was accused of killing over 300 victims and convicted of killing over 110 young females. What makes this case so disturbing is that Pedro would target young girls from ages 9 to 12 years old, luring them in with toys and money before kidnapping and later murdering them. Decades after his death, his history of sexual assault and murder qualified him as one of the most vile serial killers in criminal records. His chilling crimes spread fear across the globe and left a lasting impact on communities.

Pedro’s Early Childhood & Trauma:

Pedro Lopez was born in Tolima in 1948. He described his childhood as unstable. He stated that his life was hard due to the loss of a father figure early on in his life. He often claimed his mother was a “prostitute” since she had children with many men before and after she had Pedro. During Pedro’s childhood, it was a known fact that his mother was strict. According to Pedro’s neighbors, he was unable to hangout with children since his mother enforced such strict rules. Pedro’s mother also mentioned that he had a strong hatred towards her starting at a young age. At the age of 8 years old, he was kicked out of his home because he was seen touching his sister inappropriately by his mother. Since he was a child, Pedro had very low expectations in his household, which caused a strong, negative behavioral factor. Once he was removed from his house, he became homeless, which he mentioned was a big trauma in his lifetime. At this point in his life, he was left homeless for a year. At the age of 10, he joined a gang for “protection,” where he was then sexually assaulted frequently. These trauma issues lie among the reasons behind all of the killings he committed. When he was 12 years old, he was adopted by a family, but later fled with their money that same year.

Pedro’s Crimes:

During the 1970s, Pedro Lopez committed numerous crimes in Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador. Since the crimes occurred in several areas, the authorities struggled to connect his case to most of the murders. At the time, there were many banners highlighting missing children, which then gained the authorities’ attention, and therefore helped connect these kidnappings to Pedro. These disappearances and deaths caused fear throughout communities located in the Andes region. Many people claimed that this mass amount of missing children had to do with human trafficking, which was later proven wrong. Pedro was eventually arrested in Ecuador in 1980 after residents helped identify him. During multiple investigations, he confessed to killing hundreds of victims, though the exact number was never confirmed. In the search for these girls, authorities found 53 bodies in a forest nearby, but Pedro was found guilty for only 3 of these murders. He was then sentenced to 16 years in prison. Once this case was exposed to the public, many felt alarmed and disturbed.

Pedro’s Vanishment: 

The main reason why this case remains widely discussed is because it’s still not confirmed or solved. By this, I mean that authorities still haven’t figured out exactly how many people were killed by Pedro Lopez. Another factor why this case is still popular is that there is a large mystery surrounding Pedro after his release from prison. According to reports, his life and childhood led to unclear information and created high speculation about this man for years. What really frightens many communities is that after he was sent to a psychiatric hospital and released in 1998, he was never seen again. This here proves that although this case remains a mystery, it highlights the lack of justice served for those killed.  

Method of Murder:

Pedro claimed that he began to lure young girls by buying them small things ,like candy or trinkets. He often kidnapped smaller, poor, indigenous, or homeless females due to the fact that they are more trusting and are watched less by their guardians. After gaining the children’s trust, he would begin to sexually assault them and then eventually kill them and bury them in a nearby forest. He killed most of his victims by strangling them. He also began to travel more often to make it harder for him to get caught later in his life. He used this method because he knew he could get away with murder when he killed many people in different countries, causing the police to take longer to arrest him.

Motive of Murders:

Pedro claimed he had a bad, abusive relationship with his mother, which caused him to get kicked out of his home at a young age. Many investigators believe that his hatred towards his mother is what turned him evil against other females. According to the data, the motive for his murder began because of the way he was treated by his mother. He learned from a young age about sexual assault since it happened to him at the age of 10. Overall, there was something always wrong with Pedro mentally, but he stated at the age of 8 he “lost his innocence.” This means that once he was removed from his family and home is when he became a serial killer and turned evil.

Capture and Arrest:

The capture and arrest of Lopez marked a huge turning point after years of all the violence and disturbance he had caused. After starting his crimes in 1969, he was finally caught in 1980 after attempting to abduct a young girl. The young girl was able to escape and managed to tell people around her, so they eventually tracked Lopez down. Finally, after Lopez was caught, he confessed to multiple crimes, which led to numerous different investigations and confirmations of things he had done. He was then sentenced to prison for 16 years, so he was released in the late 1990s after serving his sentence. The reason why he was sentenced to only 16 years was that at the time that was the maximum sentence in Ecuador. 

Psychological Factors:

As a child, Lopez experienced abuse, neglect, and violence all at a young age. It is known that when you have a troubling childhood, it leads to emotional and behavioral problems in the future. He was known to be very manipulative towards his victims and became very close to them before harming them. Because of what he had gone through his whole childhood and the repeated criminal offenses, his mental health is believed to be unstable.

Conclusion: 

In conclusion, this difficult case with Pedro Lopez reveals how dangerous people can actually be. He was unnoticed for approximately 11-12 years and continued to do terrible things. All of his crimes weren’t only shocking because of what he was doing but also because of how long he was able to continue without being stopped. This clearly shows how important it is to have strong law enforcement and good protection in communities. He left a lasting fear across several countries, showing how heavily people and families are affected by those who do these disturbing things. After his cases were finalized and everyone found out about them, families knew to carefully monitor their children so more tragedies wouldn’t happen.
