If you’ve been on TikTok, Instagram, or even just talking to people at school lately, you’ve probably heard about Heated Rivalry. It kind of came out of nowhere and now everyone is obsessed. One minute, no one was talking about it, but the next, your entire For You page is full of edits, clips, and people saying “just watch the first episode,” and they are right.

Heated Rivalry is a TV show based on the book by Rachel Reid. It’s about two professional hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. On the ice, they’re rivals who can’t stand each other. Off the ice, their relationship is way more complicated. It’s enemies to lovers but with a lot more drama than you’d expect from a sports show. The story follows them over several years as they deal with their careers and their rivalry, while trying to figure out what their relationship actually means.
The main characters are played by Hudson Williams (Shane) and Connor Storrie (Ilya), and their chemistry is a huge reason the show works so well. Everything between them feels so personal. You can tell why people got attached to their characters so fast. The rest of the cast also helps make the hockey world feel real, with teammates, coaches, and family members adding more depth to the story.
You can watch Heated Rivalry on HBO Max in the U.S. (It originally premiered on Crave in Canada.) It’s not a super long season, which makes it easy to watch quickly. Once you start, it’s hard to stop. Every episode leaves you wanting more, which is probably another reason it blew up so rapidly.

So how did this show become so popular so quickly?
First, it’s not just a romance. It’s also about finding who you are, competition, and what it’s like to exist in a place that isn’t always accepting. It shows a queer relationship in professional sports, which you don’t see very often, especially not in hockey. That already makes this series stand out from most shows people are used to watching.
Second, social media blew it up. Once a few scenes went viral, it was over. People started making edits, recommending it to their friends, and talking about how good of a show it is. Suddenly, everyone wanted to know what the hype was about, and it spread fast.

Yes, there is a second season coming. The show has already been renewed, and while there is not an exact release date yet, fans are already excited for what’s to come. There’s also talk about a special episode coming out before the new season, which is just making people even more excited.
It’s inspiring real athletes. Some hockey players have openly said that “Heated Rivalry helped them feel seen and inspired them to live more authentically.” For example, real life hockey player, Jesse Kortuem, publicly came out as gay and credited the show for influencing his decision to finally share his truth after years of hiding his sexuality while playing competitive hockey.
At this point, Heated Rivalry isn’t just a show, it’s the next big thing. It went from being a book that people loved to a TV series that everyone is talking about. Whether you’re into romance, sports, or just want to know why your feed won’t stop showing hockey players staring dramatically at each other, it’s easy to see why this show took over so fast.
