Introduction:
British national Madeleine McCann was born on May 12, 2003, and at just three years old, Madeleine was abducted from her vacation apartment in Portugal on May 3, 2007. Her family members are Gerry McCann (father), Kate McCann (mother), Amelie McCann (sister), and Sean McCann (brother). In this article, I’m going to be digging deeper into the unresolved case of Madeleine and the factors leading up to her disappearance.

Disappearance:
Madeleine’s family (along with friends) arrived in Praia da Luz, Portugal, for a week-long vacation on April 28, 2007. The apartment they were staying at was the “Ocean Club Complex”. On the night of May 3rd, the family’s sixth day in Portugal, Madeleine’s parents decided to go out for dinner at one of the restaurants in the complex with their friends. Madeleine and her younger twin siblings were put to bed at around 5/6 PM. They were then left all alone in the apartment as their parents went out. Gerry and Kate had a rotating system in which they would take turns checking on the kids since the restaurant was right by the apartments, 100 yards away. When it was Kate McCann’s turn to check on the kids at around 10:00 PM, she came across Madeleine’s empty bed. She was nowhere to be found. Staff and faculty were informed, and the police were called immediately. Everyone in the apartment complex was asked to search for Madeleine or simply provide a clue regarding where she could be.

After the disappearance:
The following days after Madeleine’s disappearance, border police and airport staff were notified and put on watch for Madeleine, along with hundreds of volunteers, police, and sniffer dogs that came together in search of her. A woman, Jessie Tanner, was one of the friends the McCanns had been traveling with. She was going to check on her own daughter at around 9:10 PM and claimed she had seen a man walking alone across the street with a child in his arms. Tanner described the child as barefoot, wearing light-pink colored pajamas with a floral design on them. These were a similar description of the pajamas Madeleine was wearing that night. When this information was disclosed to police and eventually the public, a British man later came forward, telling the police it was only him and that he had been carrying his own daughter. That information was cleared and found not useful for the case moving on.
The McCann family was destroyed. No further evidence had been brought up. All they wanted was their daughter back. On May 9th, the McCanns stated that they “cannot describe the anguish and despair” they’re feeling.

Further Suspects & Evidence:
Days after Madeleine went missing, police were hitting a dead-end, thinking that forensic clues were the reason there was a lack of evidence being found pertaining to Madeleine’s disappearance. On May 14/15, a man named Robert Murat was the first real suspect they discovered in this case. Suspicion was brought to Murat due to his unusual interest in the case. Murat lived just 100 yards from the apartment where Madeline went missing. He was often seen hanging around the crime scene and offering to be a translator to police. Many journalists implied he was a pedophile, but Murat was eventually released from police custody due to the lack of evidence linking him to the actual crime. Fast-forward to early September 2007, there was no major evidence found. Due to this, the public eye, and the duty of investigators, the parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were brought in for questioning. Detectives believed that perhaps the parents staged the kidnapping and covered up Madeleine’s disappearance along with her body. The parents experienced 16 hours of questioning and a lot of interrogation, but this all led to nothing. The family left Portugal to go back to the UK on September 9, 2007.

False Madeleine Claims:
Late 2022/early 2023, a European woman, Julia Wandelt, came out to the media, specifically Instagram (@iammadeleinemccan), claiming she was Madeleine McCann. She gained tremendous amounts of attention. Her evidence to support this claim was a “similarity” she had with Madeleine: a speck in her eye, like the one Madeline has. Going into March 2023, Wandelt appeared on the Dr. Phil show. Her words, “I believe I’m Madeleine McCann”, sparked even more people. However, in 2024, DNA test results came back negative, showing that Julia is not Madeleine. It was said that Julia had a tough life, growing up with abuse, gaps in her childhood, a bad connection with family, isolation, and more. These factors could have been the reason she lied to everyone about being Madeleine.

Conclusion:
As of now, this disappearance is one of the most popular and heavily reported cases in the world. In 2026, Madeleine is now 22 years old and has been missing for 18 years. If this case interests you, there are plenty more reports, evidence, and interviews on the family that you can research on your own for more information. What are your thoughts and theories on this case? Do you think her parents were involved? Overall, I really hope that in the future we find the person who caused this tragedy and justice will be given to this poor little girl, dead or alive.
