Embrace Older Technology
Reject Smartphones

Today, modern smartphones are considered the most accessible way to take pictures, record videos, listen to music, and countless other features. But with the convenience of smartphones, something else has been lost. Older technologies such as digital cameras, CDs, stereos, and physical media offer a nostalgic quality and can be more reliable than their phone counterparts.

While iPhone cameras are advanced, they tend to manipulate the photo that was just taken. Digital cameras however preserve the lighting and quality of the photo you took and can produce pictures that are higher quality with the right settings. Cameras also have powerful flashes, resulting in prettier pictures in dimly lit environments. Digital cameras are available in affordable price ranges, with decent models being around $20-$50 on secondhand sites like eBay. Digital camera pictures have been an ongoing trend on Instagram since the pictures taken on them tend to come out in better lighting and quality.

When it comes to listening to music, older methods can be found to be superior as well. Though Spotify is a solid way many people listen to music, unless you pay for a pricey premium subscription, you’re limited to how many times you can skip through playlists with unavoidable ads. However, listening to music through physical media such as CDs offer a better listening experience as the audio isn’t compressed and you’re able to listen to it in full quality. Spotify tends to diminish the audio quality in order to save data, which is why songs tend to sound richer when played through a stereo. Another benefit with physical media is that the experience is more immersive, and you’re able to listen through an album without distraction. The fun part about physical media is being able to craft your own collection, allowing you to listen to your favorites at all times, without needing to connect to the internet.

Older technology also shines in their reliability. You may find that after a couple of years, your iPhone’s battery plummets even before you’re halfway through the day or that your phone can’t receive new updates because only the newer models are now supported. That won’t be the case with older tech, as these devices were built to perform one task well, and can last generations. Nokia phones are quite literally known for being impossible to break. Overall, older tech and physical media are less vulnerable to operating system changes and can last decades.

A rising concern when it comes to modern technology is how your data is constantly being collected and you might not even be aware of it. Smartphones have data collection systems that may track your online activity, browsing habits, or even your location. Much of the data can then be shared to companies for advertising purposes. This isn’t an issue with vintage tech, as they are offline and are not able to harvest your personal data. These devices will perform their function without using algorithms to track your behavior. Using older tech will limit how much digital surveillance companies can access and their ability to target advertisements.

There are also psychological benefits to separating yourself from smartphones. When you start using technology that has a singular dedicated purpose, distractions that come with smartphones are reduced and your focus is increased. Using older technology can be something that can help you achieve “digital minimalism.” Digital minimalism is described as “the philosophy of technology use in which you focus your online time on a small number of carefully selected and optimized activities that strongly support things you value, and then happily miss out on everything else”  from Cal Newport’s book titled Digital Minimalism. Digital minimalism is about reducing unnecessary distractions and constant interruptions, and can help you increase your productivity and stick to good habits.

Smartphones are undeniably powerful and convenient tools, so it is important to note that older tech can’t replace all of their abilities today. However, some forms of older technology might be more functional and reliable than their smartphone counterparts. By opting to use older technology, you can reduce the over-stimulation caused by smartphones and restore your focus.
