If you’re interested in medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy and ER, then you’ve probably heard about The Pitt. The Pitt is a show that focuses on the very busy lives of the nurses and doctors inside an emergency room in Pittsburgh. The show follows characters like Dr. Robby, Nurse Dana, and Dr. Langdon as they handle all of the crazy things that can happen in a single day in an emergency room. What makes this show so unique is that each episode of the show is just one hour in the emergency room, meaning that the entire season takes place in just one day in the emergency room.
Medical shows have been around for a long time, but how The Pitt depicts their story line is very different compared to other medical shows. Instead of focusing on the personal lives and relationships of doctors outside of their place of work, the show puts you quite literally into the chaos of the emergency room for one shift. Shows like Grey’s Anatomy spend a lot of time explaining the relationships and lives of the characters both inside and outside the hospital. In The Pitt, you don’t really see what is going on in the lives of the doctors and nurses outside of the hospital unless they talk about it. Instead, the show focuses on how they interact with patients and coworkers while dealing with everything happening in the ER. And, instead of jumping between different days and outside story lines, the show allows viewers to experience the same tiring shift as the doctors and nurses on the show. This real time style makes everything feel more urgent, as patients keep coming to the hospital and the staff has to make immediate, potentially life changing, decisions. With one season depicting just one day, it gives the viewers a fast moving and realistic look at the pressure and emotional weight that medical professionals go through in an ER.

This style of TV highlights the stress and emotional impact of working in emergency medicine. The doctors and nurses in the show are shown dealing with many difficult cases all at once. Keeping the story inside the ER gives viewers a closer look at the very hard job that healthcare workers endure every day.

From checking on a patient who glued her eye shut with lash glue to trying to save a child who was drowning in a pool, The Pitt shows so much of what can possibly happen during a single shift at an overcrowded medical facility that lacks adequate resources.
Even if you’re a person who does not typically enjoy medical television shows, the realities of The Pitt may end up being just what you’re missing. Try it out! The intensity right off the bat is likely to hook you in no time at all!
