Caleb Williams was arguably one of the most anticipated quarterbacks for the NFL in recent history without even playing a snap in the league due to his skill, passion for the game, and some pivotal decisions along the way.
Williams began his career at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. As a dual-threat quarterback and play-maker, Williams caught the attention of various scouts. With insane arm strength alone and the ability to scramble to extend plays with his outstanding mobility, he became one of the nation’s most desirable five-star recruits. He finished his high school career with the Elite 11 Finals MVP, awarded to the nation’s top high school quarterback prospect.
Prior to the draft, Williams was expected to suit up for the University of Oklahoma. However, when the infamous Lincoln Riley—Oklahoma’s head coach—left for USC, Williams followed suit in what is considered the most scandalous transfer in college football history. This was a transfer needed for Williams to play progression. However, when he had the opportunity to play with the USC Trojans, he did not fail.
Williams didn’t stop with his memorable NCAA season—he transferred to USC his freshman season and took the Trojans to an 11-3 record with over 4,500 yards passing, 42 passing touchdowns, and 10 rushing touchdowns. He won the Heisman Trophy. Forget completion percentage or rushing yards—Williams solidified his name among the greatest to ever play college quarterback. Moreover, he was only the second Trojan quarterback (besides Matt Leinart) to receive such infamous honors.
But beyond the statistics and championships, Williams has the in-game calm and leadership intangibles to achieve success. He has a quarterback presence that not only commands the rest of his team but makes those around him play better—which is something all Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks require. Thus, the game intangibles and the work ethic—of improvement and want—come naturally and regularly.
Williams, in conjunction with all the skills, the work, and the right decisions made in between, is already on the path to succeed within the NFL. He possesses everything from expected high school drafter to expected college Heisman winner to render him favorite right now for something special. In addition, his bloodlines have everything to suggest a long, prosperous tenure in the league.
